Kwikset Obsidian Smart Lock with Home Connect Technology Provides a Modern Take on Smart Home Connectivity and Security
LAS VEGAS (January 9, 2018) — The Kwikset® brand of Spectrum Brands, Inc. – Hardware & Home Improvement Division will showcase its Obsidian Smart Lock with Home Connect™ Technology at CES 2018. With the introduction of a connected version of its popular Obsidian Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt expected in 2018, Kwikset is delivering on its promise to manufacture a smart lock for every homeowner, and deliver convenience and security at every turn.
Obsidian is an extremely slim, modern, key-free electronic lock with a truly capacitive touchscreen. When paired with a smart home security system, Obsidian can be controlled through the smart phone app for the particular system and connected to other smart home products – both top desired features for a smart lock according to smart lock research from Kwikset in 2016.
Obsidian with Home Connect will be among the first smart locks to be Z-Wave Plus™ certified using the latest Z-Wave 500 chipset, which enables extended wireless range, and superior network security and encryption. The lock will be compatible with leading Z-Wave smart home security systems, including Samsung SmartThings, Vera, Amazon Alexa via Samsung SmartThings and Wink for added convenience.
With manufacturer sales of connected home and security hardware totaling $7.6 billion in 2016 (Mintel, Smart Homes US 2017), Kwikset is opening a new sales channel for consumers who prefer modern design to adopt connected smart home technology.
Additional Cutting-Edge Features for Kwikset’s Obsidian Smart Lock:
Low-Profile Design: Obsidian is a low profile electronic lock projecting less than an inch off the door.
Convenient Touchscreen: Obsidian features an ultra-responsive, capacitive exterior touchscreen that quickly illuminates upon touch for faster code entry. The illuminated screen reveals a crisp white LED display designed for both day and night lighting.
Patented Security: The exterior touchscreen of Obsidian features SecureScreen™ technology, helping prevent against unwanted entry commonly associated with other touchscreen products. With SecureScreen, users are prompted to touch two random numbers before entering their access code to encourage fingerprints across the screen.
Backup Power: In case the batteries run out, Obsidian features a 9V terminal at the bottom of the deadbolt exterior that acts as a backup power source to display the touchscreen for code entry. Unlike other key-free smart locks, the terminal is unobtrusive and discreet.
The smart lock will be released in 2018 through select smart home security partners and retailers, but will be on display at the Kwikset CES booth #41018 in the Smart Home Marketplace, CES Tech West. Kwikset’s Obsidian Electronic Deadbolt is available for purchase now at select retailers for the suggested retail price of $179.
