Is Your Home Secure?

Find out if your home is vulnerable to intrusion by going through the below questions.

Security Facts
  • Did you know most unlawful entries are through doorways? About 50% of those are through doors left unlocked.
  • 61.1% of burglaries involved forcible entry, and the total property loss due to burglaries in 2007 was $4.3 billion.

How safe is your home? Hopefully, you answered “very safe.” But how do you know? For new homeowners, and even those who have been in their home awhile, you should consider obtaining a third-party risk assessment (from a home security expert or locksmith).

Some of the questions that should be asked include:

  • What do I have that is worth stealing? Is it visible? Do I keep my car keys near the inside of an exterior door in my home where they could be seen and potentially taken by a criminal?
  • How is my home currently being secured? Why is that adequate, or why do I want to upgrade?
  • What is my outdoor security lighting system?
  • Where do I keep my valuables?

Whether you are considering home security options for brand-new construction or are researching upgrades, Kwikset wants to provide the education and resources to help you make the best decision for your home. To learn more, see the Smart Tips below.

Born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, I’m used to the heat and humidity that abounds in this climate. Direct sunlight and weather can deteriorate locks over time. My father was a contractor and rental unit owner, and one of his major hurdles was changing the locks: back then it was expensive and time consuming.

I’m a big fan of the Kevo technology. I find that I often discover and start using products before they become really popular. That’s why when a friend showed me a video about Kwikset’s Bluetooth lock technology I knew I had to check it out. I bought one online as soon as it was available.

Choosing the right dog breed for your family requires consideration on many different levels, including protectiveness. In addition to superior locks, secure doors, and a reliable alarm system, home security often includes another layer of defense: a guard dog.

Kwikset was proud to sponsor National Night Out events across the country last month promoting involvement in crime prevention activities, police/community partnerships, and neighborhood camaraderie. This year’s event was the biggest yet, drawing 37.8 million neighbors across 16,124 communities. Neighbors turned out with their families for carnival rides, food, and most importantly, home safety and security tips.

A resource guide for new homeowners and remodelers to use for reference when choosing new door hardware.

Before we purchased Kwikset SmartKey for our home security, my husband and I had already installed Kwikset hardware throughout our property. The classic design and quality of Kwikset’s hardware was what initially caught our eye and prompted us to adorn our home with Kwikset knobs on all of the interior doors.

Earlier this year my purse was stolen. Naturally, personal items were taken, too, including my house keys. As a result, we had to change our locks immediately. Recalling an earlier Kevo reference we saw on a television program, my husband and I immediately realized the benefits. My husband works in IT, and he just thought the idea of Kevo was brilliant.

A door’s style can provide an insightful glance at what’s on the other side. Doors welcome guests or tenants into a private space, and a clean entrance can set the tone and mood upon arrival.

The smart home has grown from an idea to a standard and changes daily in tandem with the evolution of other lifestyle essentials and corresponding technological advances.

I have served as the Camp Locksmith on a military post in the Middle East for three years. A few years ago, some theft incidents occurred in employee housing on the camp, and I was in charge of finding a solution to upgrade our locks and, hopefully, eliminate the problem.

Smart Tips for Better Home Security

Glass Door - Home Security Tips & Solutions | Kwikset
Do you Have Glass Doors?
An intruder can access your home by breaking the glass and turning the thumb turn to open the door.
  • Install double cylinder deadbolts that need to be opened with a key from the inside as well as the outside.
  • Retrofit ground floor windows with locking hardware.
Deadbolt Locks - Home Protection Tips & Solutions | Kwikset
Do you have deadbolts on all exterior doors?
Most burglaries are the result of forcible entry. Experienced burglars know that the garage door is usually the weakest point of entry followed by the back door.
  • Install and use Grade I deadbolt locks on all exterior doors leading into the garage as well as entry doors leading into house.
Outdoor Lighting - Home Security Tips & Solutions | Kwikset
Is your backyard easily accessible?
An unguarded backyard can be seen as an opportunity for thieves to get close to your house. Tall plants and bushes can provide burglars a cover while they attempt to break in.
  • Install outdoor lighting and a secure fence.
  • Keep plants and bushes near your home low and plant prickly bushes.
Unoccupied Homes Security Tips & Solutions | Kwikset
Do you secure your home before going out of town?
Burglars target unoccupied homes with the easiest access, the greatest amount of cover, and with the best escape routes.
  • Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to help you pick up mail and to check in on your home to give the appearance of occupancy.
  • With a Kwikset SmartKey, you can re-key your lock to a temporary key for your neighbor. Re-key back to your permanent key upon return.
  • Or install a Kwikset SmartCode and provide a temporary code for your neighbor to use.
New Homeowner Security Tips & Solutions
Are You a New Homeowner?
During the sales process realtors, inspectors, potential buyers and workmen are in and out of the house. Many times these individuals are allowed use of the door keys unsupervised.
  • Replace or re-key your locks immediately after you move in to ensure that only you control the keys to your new home.
Key Copies – Security & Home Protection Tips
Who Has A Copy of Your Keys?
Have you ever handed your keys to a valet? Or give a repairman a spare key? There is a possibility that your keys have been copied or you have extra keys that are unaccounted for.
  • Re-key your locks any time you feel you might have misplaced a key or allowed a stranger to borrow your key. Kwikset SmartKey re-key technology makes rekeying fast and convenient, without having to replace the entire lock.
Old Locks - Home Security Tips & Solutions | Kwikset
Have You Been Living in Your HOme awhile?
Locks are subject to wear and tear. Worn or rusted locks are a serious weakness in home security. Old, worn out locks are easier to pick and break, and they are more difficult to open legitimately with a key as time goes on.
  • Closely inspect deadbolts every six months for signs of tampering and excess wear. If your lock has severe tarnish, rust, or other visible signs of wear, it may be time to look for a replacement lock. If your lock is becoming increasingly difficult to open with the key, especially on cold nights, you need to replace or service the lock immediately to avoid an inconvenient malfunction that may leave you locked out.
Late Night Arrival - Home Security
Do you often come home late?
Late night can be a dangerous time since most of the neighbors are sleeping and lights are off.
  • Have your keys ready so you won't fumble for them once you are at the door.
  • Leave a porch light on and have a flash light ready.
Hidden Keys - Home Security Solutions
Do you Usually Hide Keys?
Never hide keys under a mat or taped above a door jamb: Burglars know these places.
  • Don't hide keys. Leave a key with a trusted family member, friend or neighbor.
  • If you frequently lose or misplace your keys, you might benefit from a combination door lock such as the SmartCode. Combination door locks can be opened by inputting a code into the lock.
