• What is Obsidian?

Obsidian is Kwikset’s newest touchscreen electronic deadbolt. It is a very sleek, modern, and low-profile deadbolt that doesn’t have a keyway (doesn’t use a key).
  • How do I lock Obsidian if it doesn’t have a keyway?

Obsidian can be locked by tapping the 1-touch lock icon on the lower-right of the touchscreen or by entering a valid user code then pressing the lock icon. If the 3rd party controller supports smart device control, then it can be used to control the Obsidian with Home Connect.
  • How do I unlock Obsidian if it doesn’t have a keyway?

Obsidian can be unlocked by entering a valid user code on the touchscreen. Obsidian with Home Connect can be connected to a home automation system using a 3rd party home automation controller. If the 3rd party controller supports smart device control, then it can be used to control the Obsidian with Home Connect.
  • How do I add user codes to Obsidian?

Follow the instructions in the product pack for information on how to add user codes. There are also no keys to lose or that can be stolen.

With Obsidian with Home Connect, it might also be possible to add user codes remotely if that is a feature offered by a 3rd party home automation controller and their associated mobile device app.
  • Can the Obsidian deadbolt be picked or bumped?

The Obsidian deadbolt does not have a keyway so there is no key cylinder to pick or bump. There are also no keys to be lost or stolen.
  • How is the Obsidian powered?

The Obsidian deadbolt is powered by 4xAA batteries. For best performance, we highly recommend alkaline batteries from a major brand. Do not use re-chargeable or lithium ion batteries.
  • How will I know if the batteries are low?

Obsidian will notify you of low batteries with audio and visual cues at three different low battery levels.
  • How do I unlock Obsidian if the batteries die?

Obsidian has a set of 9V battery terminals underneath the touchscreen. If the batteries on the inside die, you can power the touchscreen by simply touching a 9V battery to the outside terminals and maintain contact through the following steps:
    • Wait for the screen to light up
    • Enter a valid user code
    • Wait for the motor to retract the deadbolt
    • Once inside, immediately replace the batteries
  • How does Obsidian protect against fingerprint/smudge attacks?

Obsidian has a patented security feature called SecureScreen™ that helps prevent code detection by distributing fingerprint smudges on the touchscreen.
  • How does SecureScreen™ work?

As you use a touchscreen lock, you leave fingerprint smudges on the touchscreen. SecureScreen will light up two random numbers for you to touch before you can enter your code so that there will be smudges on all the numbers and not just the numbers of your user code.
  • How do I turn on/off SecureScreen™?

By default, SecureScreen is enabled but you can disable it (although it is not recommended) by flipping dipswitch #4 to the OFF position.
  • How many user codes does Obsidian support?

Obsidian supports 16 user codes. Obsidian with Home Connect supports 30 user codes.
  • What finishes does Obsidian come in?

Obsidian is available in Satin Nickel and Venetian Bronze.
  • Will someone be able to unlock my Obsidian using just a 9V battery?

The 9V battery simply powers the touchscreen. If someone uses a 9V battery to power the touchscreen, they will still need to enter a valid user code to unlock the Obsidian.
  • What temperature ranges can Obsidian operate within?

The Obsidian touchscreen is designed to operate within -40°F to 150°F temperature range.
  • Can I control Obsidian with my smart device?

Obsidian with Home Connect can be connected to a home automation system using a 3rd party home automation controller. If the controller supports smart device control, then it can be used to control the Obsidian with Home Connect.
