About eKeys

What is an eKey?

An eKey is an encrypted electronic key. The eKey moves your physical key into the digital world and significantly improves your home access experience. With the Kevo app, you can enjoy the security and convenience of complete key management:

  • Send an eKey to anyone, anywhere, anytime
  • Temporarily disable or permanently delete any user from the Kevo system
  • eKeys never expire and can be reassigned from one person to the next
  • New free, unlimited Guest eKeys - Learn More

Reassigning eKeys

Changing babysitters? Get a new contractor? Need to find a new roommate?

With the enhanced sharing feature of the eKey, you can send an eKey to anyone, retrieve it when you no longer want them to have it and reassign that same eKey to another person.

Level of Access

  • > Owner eKey

When you set up your phone to work with the deadbolt, your phone will automatically receive the only Owner eKey. The Owner eKey allows the user to manage other users (purchase, send, disable, reassign and delete eKeys), view the lock's history, receive notifications, and delete the lock if needed.

  • > Admin eKey

Like an Owner eKey, an Admin eKey gives the recipient the ability to manage users (purchase, send, disable, reassign and delete eKeys), view the lock's history and receive notifications.

  • > Anytime eKey

You can send this eKey to anyone, anywhere, anytime. This eKey never expires and can be reassigned from one person to the next as an Anytime or Scheduled eKey.

  • > Scheduled eKey

This eKey allows you to pre-set time constraints for the recipient. You control the days and the time of the week when the eKey will be active. If you already have eKeys in your account, you will be able to designate them as a Scheduled eKey. If needed, additional Scheduled eKeys are an in-app purchase of $1.99, never expire and can be reassigned from one person to the next as a Scheduled or Anytime eKey.

  • > Guest eKey

This free eKey allows you to give your Guest unrestricted access for a 24 hour period and will then be automatically deleted. If this eKey is not used within 24 hours after the eKey has been sent, it will expire. Guest eKeys are unlimited and can be sent to the same person or different people each time.

Usage Tracking

Kevo’s Lock History

With eKeys, Kevo tracks user activity in its system. When accessing the lock history you will be able to see:

  • Who locked/unlocked Kevo
  • Who sent an eKey
  • Who accepted an eKey
  • Which eKey/User was enabled/disabled from the Kevo Bluetooth Electronic Deadbolt Lock
  • Which eKey/User was deleted from the Kevo Bluetooth Electronic Deadbolt Lock

eKey Benefits

We designed the eKey with the traditional key in mind, but added a whole new level of security and convenience. With the Kevo mobile app, management of all Kevo users is simple and secure. There is no need to worry about losing a key or getting a key back from someone.

  • Each eKey is unique and assigned specifically to a Kevo user and Kevo smart lock
  • An eKey can be shared digitally in a few clicks
  • You are in full control of who receives an eKey. There are no more unknown copies of the keys to your home
  • An eKey cannot be duplicated unlike a physical key
  • Using Kevo’s smart lock management system helps you track all eKey users at a glance
  • You can temporarily disable or completely delete any unwanted users from Kevo
